6-22-99
A game is scheduled for Thursday June 24th.
6-21-99
For the first time in TWL history, a third game was played
in the same night. This game saw the team of Jim, Bill, Deak, and
Chris play against Tim, Jason, Matt, and Scott Dipple (making
his TWL debut). The game itself was very dreary, reflecting poignantly
the energy of its players. Both teams were sound defensively including
a running catch over the curb in foul territory by Chris. Jason did
however break from his homerun slump by taking a one strike breaking pitch that
stayed up out over the curb in left field. In a game marred by decent pitching and
even better defense, the final score saw Matt's team take the victory by a
final score of 3-0.
6-21-99
The second game of the night had more players and thus
lead to lower scores and virtually impeccable defense. It was a
four on four game pitting Matt Crain, Chris, Tim, and Jason vs.
Matt, Chris Deak, Jim, and Bill. Matt continued to be the thorn
in Jason's side; preventing a couple of his hits from being homeruns.
Bill proved to be the big offensive man, leading his team to a 9-0
shutout victory.
6-21-99
The first game Wednesday night featured the debut of Matt Crain
to the TWL. He teamed with Chris and Matt to battle the two biggest
power threats in the TWL: Bill and Jim. Crain adjusted well
after a couple of innings and settled in to contribute a good
offensive and defensive game. The game itself was for the most
part a blowout. Powered by Bill's four homeruns and Jim's five strikeouts,
that duo went on to win handily despite a three homerun game from Matt to
provide his team with some offense.
6-16-99
A game is tentatively scheduled for tonight (Wednesday). As
always, all are welcome.
6-14-99
The second game of the night saw three on three competition again and
featured the debut of two more players to the TWL. Ryan Radle and Brian Kamp
appeared on the scene just in time to play in the second game. Radle left the game
early after a line drive off of the face but was replaced by Tim the third inning.
Tim joined the team of Jim, and Matt to oppose Mario, Brian Kamp, and Chris. This
game, much like its predecessor, was low scoring as well. Kamp showed decent range
in the outfield and pitched two effective innings, his only run allowed being a
homerun off of Jim's bat. After many close calls and robbed attempts, Tim finally
belted his first homer as well during this game, a solo shot in the top of the seventh
which only padded his team's lead. Matt provided the greatest offense for his team; a
five for eight effort which offered his teammate's many RBI opportunities. Despite
a last inning rally which saw Chris hit his seventh homerun, Brian, Mario and Chris
succumbed to Jim, Matt, Tim, and Ryan by the final score of 5-2.
6-13-99
The TWL was very active Thursday (June 10th) in what turned
out to be a record setting night. The first game saw the team
of Matt, Jim and Chris vs. Jason, Tim and Mario. As expected with
these six players, the defense was extremely tight the entire game.
Jim broke the game open in the third inning with a line drive homerun
which barely missed Tim’s hands as he attempted to make the catch.
Despite a 4 for 9 effort from Jason, he and his team were unable to
generate any runs which made for the first shutout in TWL history.
Though some teams have only scored a couple of runs, this was the first
time a team failed to plate a single run. Matt’s team added insurance
in the top of the seventh to their lead with a four run rally capped off
by Jim’s second homerun of the night and giving him four RBI’s on the
day. Rain came about two hours prior to game time but the field was dry
by the time the game started. However, the pitching area was wet which
made it difficult for the pitchers to get a good jump on foul balls
or short fly balls. This difficulty often resulted in the batter getting
an extra pitch or two to work with. Mario did make an outstanding running
catch though despite the conditions which resulted in a dive and a crimson
mask over the lower part of his kneecap. The final score was Jim, Matt,
and Chris-6, Tim, Mario, and Jason-0.
6-7-99
The second game Sunday night saw a rematch of June 4th's
classic with drastically different results. Bill and Chris again
battled Jim and Gary in a game which soon degenerated into a
blowout. Defense was a key component of this game
as routine catches were dropped by Chris and Bill
and ultimately cost their team several runs. The team of Gary and Jim
did, however, consistently find the holes in the defense and place
their hits accordingly. Jim crushed two homeruns as part of his 7 RBI effort
on way to sealing a victory for his team. Bill provided the lone bright
spot for his team as he continued his hot hitting with his tenth homerun
to bring in two runs. Gary is starting to become a more dangerous weapon
on both sides of the ball. His hitting is becoming much more consistent
and a little more power-driven and his defense has become outstanding
much to the shagrin of many batters. The game was handily won by Jim and Gary
in seven innings thanks to huge nights from both guys at the plate. In lieu of Matt;s
prolonged absence, Jim has stepped up his performance to become the game's top pitcher, including
striking out 11 batters in the last three games (four in this one alone).
6-7-99
The TWL was active Sunday night and saw the debut of two new players to the league.
Greg and Brian each played two innings in the first game before having to leave
due to curfew restrictions. In their limited playing time, they each played well, making
routine defensive plays and waging a hit or two against the opposition.
The winds however, were blowing in from left field and continuously
pushed the ball toward the right field side. This inconvenience ostensibly made
every fly ball die in mid air which often complicated the outfielder's
perception of it. Nonetheless, the trio of Bill, Brian, and Jim defeated
Chris, Gary, and Greg in a game which came down to the wire. Held scoreless for a while
Gary and Chris began a string of base hits in the fifth which plated enough runs
to keep them in the game. The game was tied going into the bottom of the seventh where,
with the bases full and only one down, Jim dropped a base hit into center field
to give the victory to Bill, Brian(who was absent by then), and himself. Bill
did break his homerun drought with his ninth while Gary robbed Jim of a homerun with what could
arguably the greatest defensive play in TWL history. He snagged a
line drive with one hand while sliding down the grass hill
in left field on his knees. It had to be seen to be truly appreciated. The final score was Bill,
Brian, and Jim-5,Gary, Chris, and Greg-4.
6-5-99
The game Friday night was a wild extra inning affair which
saw Jim and Gary beat Bill and Chris in eight innings. Scores
were higher than the last few games and the defense on both
sides was not as crisp as players had been demonstrating the previous
weeks. Down by 2, Bill and Chris were able to rally in the seventh to gain a
one run lead only to give it up in the bottom of the inning to
force the extra frames. This marked the first game in a long time
where neither team hit a home run during the game. Bill went
a very impressive 14 for 22 including five RBI but ultimately was part of a
losing effort which saw his team defeated 8-7.
6-4-99
A game is scheduled for tonight at 1 am. Bill, Gary, Chris and Andy
are expected to play for sure with many others being probable. As always,
everyone is welcome to play.
6-4-99
After the first game ended so quickly, everyone with the exception of Brian
stuck around to play another. As luck or fate would have it, the teams that were
picked were exactly the same as the previous game giving Gary's team a chance to
avenge their earlier loss. This game though was not as close as its predecessor. Defensively,
Andy proved to have a huge impact as he simply owned anything hit remotely close to left field.
Jason stepped up his pitching performance as he struck out three batters in only
two innings of work. Jim provided the brunt of the offense with six RBI's and a homerun
which was absolutely blasted into left field. Jason's homerun drought continued though
as Matt continued his personal bid of keeping Jason away from the long ball. Tim's team
generated little offense despite two key errors from Chris mainly due to Jim and Jason's
pitching and Andy's defense. But, in the bottom of the seventh, Gary took a two strike
breaking ball from Chris and deposited it into the street in right field for his second career
homerun. That rally was too little and too late as Jim's team was able to seal off the victory and
conclude their sweep in the double header.
6-4-99
Thursday night saw the debut of two new players to the TWL in a game that
came close to setting a record. Andy and Brian Georger made their first appearances and
quickly proved that they could adjust effectively to the rigors of wiffleball at night.
Andy joined Chris, Jim, and Jason in competition against Matt, Bill, Gary,Tim and Brian. Their was not
a lot of offense thanks to tremendous defensive plays from Matt as expected and Andy; each
taking away would be homeruns from the opposition. Jason's team took a 4-0 lead into the bottom
of the seventh with their eyes on recording the first shutout in TWL history. However, Matt's team
was able to rally and bring a run across the plate. But, with the bases loaded
and two out Jim snagged a routine fly ball to end the game and garner the "W" for his team.
A very close game for the most part which saw Jim's homerun make the difference in his team's victory.
6-1-99
A game has been scheduled for Thursday June 3rd. Scheduled to appear
so far are Jason, Chris and Bill. Others are expected and as always everyone
is invited.
5-31-99
A second game was played on Sunday with fewer players than the first due to the
time that it started. Jason arrived towards the end of the first game and he teamed with
Chris and Chris Birk to take on Jim and Mario in a five inning game. Defense for
both sides was virtually impeccable including two spectacular plays by Mario; one on a fly ball and the
other turning a would be double into an out with an outstanding grab. Jason and Birk each had great games
offensively while Chris held the trio down with an abysmal 1 for 8 outing. Jim and
Mario each had decent games at the plate including a career high eight hit game
for Mario who raised his average substantially in the process. Jason hit the lone homerun
for the game which proved big in leading his team to a 9-5 victory. Despite
a small rally in the fifth, Jason was able to shut the door with his pitching as his
team secured the victory.
5-31-99
Sunday marked the return of one player and the debut of two new ones in a game which
was close and high in drama. Aaron made his debut in the "modern era" of the TWL, or at
least his first appearance since we started keeping stats. Also, Brian and Andrew
made their TWL debuts. The game itself featured Chris Birk, Brian, and Chris versus Jim, Andrew,
Aaron, and Mario. Brian got off to a hot start but eventually his bat was cooled by the
opposition's defense. Birk supplied most of the offense for his team, going 4 for 10 and driving in
two including a home run. The defense of Birk, Brian and Chris was very strong as they held the other team
to seven hits the entire game including stifling Andrew to a 1 for 8 debut. Brian's team had the shutout going
into the bottom of the seventh but all of that was changed as Jim took a two out pitch from Brian into
dead center field for a three run homerun. That shot brought his team to within one run but that
was as close as they would get, the next batter was retired to end the game. Ultimately, the team of
Mario, Jim, Aaron and Andrew lost by the final score of 4-3.
5-29-99
The TWL had a three player game Friday in which Jim, Chris and Bill battled
each other into extra innings. For a three player game, the scores were for the most
part low and the defense was extremely tight. Jim ended his short homerless streak
at two games as he blasted a shot into right field to lead off the third inning.
He also continued his hot pitching by striking out four batters. Bill meanwhile
continues to display his power, homering in his third straight game including two in this game.
After five innings, the score was tied between Chris and Bill who each had five runs. So, as is the case
with three player games, the low player, in this instance Jim, becomes the all time
pitcher and the individuals tied battle it out in the extra frames. Chris managed to
break the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a monstrous three run homerun that landed
in the street to seal the victory for him. For Chris, it was his career high third homerun in the
game. The final score was Chris-8, Bill-5 and Jim-4; a very close game for all three parties involved.
5-28-99
Following the nine player game, five guys stuck around to play what was originally scheduled
as a quick five inning game. Jim, Jason and Tim battled the team of Matt and Chris in what
could be argued as the greatest game in TWL history. There weren't any homeruns and offense was atypically
low but the game itself was still very competitive and featured the best from all five players. Jim
dominated the pitching aspect of the game as he continued his torrid pitching by striking
out four batters. This game also marked the second straight game in which Jim was held
without a homerun which is probably the closest to a slump he will ever fall into. Matt sustained
his rash of incredible defense as he took away many would-be homers throughout the
game including two from Tim alone. One catch was made with Matt almost standing in the street after
a blast which ultimately counted for nothing as he hauled in the fly. What would be
outstanding for most defenders is quickly becoming very routine for Matt. Tim also impressed
with his defense as he showed that his agility and speed give him the opportunity of playing
balls which most would consider unplayable. This ability allowed Tim to take many hits away
from Matt and Chris throughout the game. After five innings, the game was knotted up at three runs apiece
so extra frames were required. In the seventh, Jason, Jim, and Tim got two runs across in what ostensibly was
the game winning rally. However, Chris and Matt were able to scrape together a rally of their own in the bottom
of the seventh to score two runs of their own. Even more innings were needed. The extra frames featured stingy
defense and outstanding pitching from everybody as both teams were essentially shut down offensively. Each team
had a few hits but they would soon be offset by a couple of outs and the rally
would die. Finally, in the bottom of the tenth inning (the fifth extra inning) with a runner on first
and only one out, Matt took a breaking ball from Tim over the plate and hit it into
right field for a game winning triple. This one had all the elements of a classic and ultimately saw Matt and Chris
win the game in 10 innings by the final score of 6-5.
5-27-99
The first game of the night showcased the debut of two new players to the TWL. Sal and Chris Lohaus both
played their first game in what was the largest game (population wise) in TWL history. Sal and Lohaus were on the
same team along with TWL veterans Mario, Jason and Chris Deak. They played against the foursome
of Matt, Jim, Tim, and Chris in what was a close game for the most part. After four innings, the score was
all tied up at two, indicating the exceptional defense being played by both sides. However, in the fifth, Tim's
team was able to break the game open as they rallied to plate eight runs and take a lead which they would
not relinquish. The rally was capped by a triple from Tim
with the bases loaded which gave his team a comfortable lead
to work with for the last two innings. Sal played well in his first game, going 2 for 7 and pitching one inning of scoreless
wiffleball. Despite a slow start, Lohaus also adjusted well to the rigors and intracacies of the
TWL as he went 2 for 5 and made two pretty decent catches in the field to prevent runs from scoring. It should be noted
also that he played the entire game without the luxury of shoes. While runs were scarce for the most part, Matt got
his team off to a quick start by depositing the ball into the left field grass in the first inning
for a two run homerun. That would be the only homerun in the entire game. With four players
playing defense for each team and relatively little wind, team defense was fundamentally sound
for both sides. Occassionally there was a dropped fly ball or a bobbled grounder but typically
those errors would be offset by an exceptional catch or a key strikeout.
5-25-99
The TWL was able to get a game in Sunday and it featured the tandem of Chris and Jim defeating
Bill and Gary by a final score of 12-8. Jim had a great game, hitting two homeruns and driving
in 10 of his team's 12 runs. Bill also hit a homerun, a two run blast that he absolutely
crushed into left field. Gary and Bill both pitched decently as they each struck out two batters throughout
their innings of work. The team of Chris and Jim however had timely and well placed hitting which facilitated
their high scoring effort. Jim, seemingly in response to Jeff's incredible pitching Friday, came back with a
five strikeout effort in only four innings of work. The pitching crown which was once held
solely by Matt, now has a number of people who could arguably claim to be the "best pitcher in the TWL."
With the winds from Friday gone, defense returned to normal and as is becoming the norm, was
virtually flawless the entire evening. Gary and Bill made a run in the later innings but were
unable ultimately to generate enough offense to secure the win.
5-23-99
The game Friday featured the debut of Jeff to the TWL and he had a huge
impact in the game with his exceptional abilities. The team of Jeff and Chris
squared off against Jim and Bill in what was for the most part a pretty close game. With the
exception of Chris, everyone had a homerun including a blast from Jeff which cleared the
curb and landed in the road in left-center. Jeff also proved he could play defense as he
took two would-be homeruns away from Bill and Jim in consecutive at bats. Jim and Jeff both contributed
five RBI games but it was Chris' four RBI effort that game his team the edge and the eventual victory. Jeff
did set a TWL record in his first game as he struck out an unprecedented six batters in only four innings of
work. The wind was extremely fierce the whole night, at times blowing completely out and at other
times pushing the ball toward foul territory. This made the defense in the game very tricky and some
routine flys were dropped due to the unpredictability of the wind and the tendency of the ball
to carry at the last minute. Despite all of that, all four players had generally good games defensively.
5-21-99
A game will be played on Friday at 1 AM. As always,
anyone is welcome to stop by and play.
5-19-99
A game was played last Friday and was a very close contest
packed with offense. The team of Jim and Bill ultimately beat
the trio of Matt, Jason and Chris with a final score of 12-11.
Defense was solid all around and the only homerun came off
the bat of Jim who hit a three run homerun as part of his seven
RBI effort for the game. Also, Chris struck out a career
high four batters in three innnings pitched. The play of the game (actually two)
came in the last inning as Matt made two tremendous catches to rob both Jim
and Bill of homeruns. The first was a running one handed grab and the second
was a catch made with his back to his infield. Both were extraordinary catches. But,
all for naught as his team was unable to generate another run or two to take the victory away from
Jim and Bill.
5-14-99
A game is scheduled for tonight to begin around 1 AM. Anyone is welcome to
stop by and play.
5-13-99
The TWL played two games Tuesday night and they
were both low scoring and defensively grounded. They also marked the
return of Mario and Chris Birk from college and to the TWL and featured the debut
of Tim to the league. Tim proved right away in the first game that he could swing the
bat, hitting safely in his first three at bats. Later, in the field Tim robbed Birk of a
would be three run homer with a tremendous catch in the grass. He also struck
out two in two innings of work with a nasty curve that kept batters fooled. A total of eight
players showed up to play and the first game pitted Tim, Bill, Mario, and Chris vs. Chris Birk, Jim, Matt
and Gary. This game was a clinic for solid defense and pitching. Many of the innings
went 1-2-3 and offense was extremely difficult to generate. An ostensibly errorless game and one of the
quickest in the TWL's history, it ended with Matt, Jim, Birk, and Gary winning 4-1. The second game
followed the same nature as the first in that defense was outstanding and offense for the most part was virtually
non-existent. It featured the team of Gary, Bill, Matt, and Tim vs. Birk, Mario, Jim, and Chris. Bill broke open a scoreless
game in the fourth with a huge solo homerun to right-centerfield. Once the fifth inning came
around, however, it became Jim's show. He singlehandedly lifted his team to victory with a three run homerun in
the fifth and another three run shot in the sixth to cap off a 7 RBI game for himself. Mario pitched well, striking out two batters in only two
innings of work. The game started extremely close for the first five innings which is not indicated
by the 9-1 final which saw Jim, Birk, Mario, and Chris take the victory. Overall, two great games for the TWL which proved the addage that
great defense will always stop great offense. The low scores are an indication of that defense and the fact that each participant's average went
down as a result of these two games.
5-10-99
A game will be played Tuesday night, May 11th. All are welcome to play. Be sure to
check back often so that you don't miss any of the games.
5-9-99
The TWL got in one game over the weekend and as school
wraps up for most of the players, the league is expecting to play many more games
and is also anticipating the return of many players. Saturday saw another interesting game
as the team of Jim, Jason, and Chris Deak beat the duo of Matt and Chris. The game featured exceptional
defense on both sides with many players being robbed of homeruns and
extra base hits due to the tenacious defense of the opposition. The TWL continues to
symbolize the paramount of wiffleball defense. Offensively, Jim and Jason turned the game
into a personal homerun derby by hitting some of the biggest blasts in the league's history. They
each had tremendous games and were imperative in their team's victory. Deak started hot but
his bat cooled down as the game persisted including one inning where he made all three outs for
his team. Overall, a pretty decisive victory for the winning trio who all inflated their statssignificantly.
5-4-99
Again the TWL was in full force over the weekend, playing two games on Friday night. The first
was a three way match between Chris, Chris Deak, and Matt and saw Deak
win with a one out single in the bottom of the last inning. The game also
saw tremendous offensive production from Matt and Deak, including three homeruns from the latter. The second game
of the night pitted Matt and Chris versus Jason and Chris Deak. This was one of the closer games in TWL history and
could best be described as a pitcher's duel. Runs were few and far between and
defense was superb as both teams had to scrape and plod to garner any offensive support. Each
pitcher threw well but ultimately the duo of Matt and Chris prevailed by the narrow margin of 4-3. A last inning
rally seemed imminent for Jason and Deak but was halted to give their team a loss.
4-29-99
A game is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow night at 1 am. Also, there
might be a game Saturday night as well.
4-26-99
The game on Friday was rescheduled to Saturday last week and
the TWL saw the reemergence of three players. Scott,
Jason, and Chris Deak all returned to action after hiatuses, but each
proved that their skills had not deteriorated. Jason in particular, proved that
if he played regularly, he could threaten Jim's dominance by blasting five homeruns
and driving in 16 runs in only 21 at bats. The TWL actually was able to squeeze in
two games Saturday night. The first saw Matt, Jim, and Jason defeat Scott, Chris
and Chris Deak thanks primarily to Jason's big bat and Jim's tremendous pitching (2 k's in
two innings of work). Pitching and defense were pretty solid on both teams. The victorious
trio got very timely hitting and a couple of mammoth homeruns to ensure
a relatively easy victory. The biggest surprise however was Chris Deak's
blast over the left field curb in the second inning after two previous strikeouts. The second
game was close and even went into extra innings to determine
a victor. In what was a relatively low scoring game, the team of Scott, Chris Deak, and
Jim defeated Jason, Matt and Chris by a final score of 5-4. As with the first game, defense was
pretty consistent including a tremendous play by Jim in left field
to rob Jason of what would have been his second homerun of the
game. That play proved to save the game for Jim's team as well. Scott further proved his pitching
capabilities by striking out four batters over the duration of both games. A nice
feat considering the lengthy absence from the sport.
4-11-99
A game has been scheduled for Friday at 1 AM. As usual,
everyone is welcome
4-9-99
The TWL actually played two shorter games on this night
to accomodate a player who arrived later in the evening. The
first game saw Jim, Matt, and Chris play a very competitive
game in which Jim edged out a narrow victory over both opponents. The
second game saw the team of Jim and Chris beat the duo of Matt and
Gary by the score of 9-6. As is becoming the trend, defense in
both games was outstanding with only a few lapses for both teams and some
other outstanding plays. Jim had an amazing night, hitting the longest
home run in the history of the TWL which he would follow with three
more homeruns as the night progressed. This night
also marked the first homerun for Chris who followed that up with
his second later in the evening. Matt was up to his usual
pitching antics again as he raised his strikeout total to 14 in
only six games. These games also featured the debut of the TWL's newest
player, Needs Work, a 1985 Honda Accord which was conveniently
left in the parking lot we play in. Needs did prove to be
a solid player, saving a few base hits and providing a boost
to team morale when needed. He epitomized the saying:"There
is no I in Accord." We hope to get a picture if he is not towed away.
4-2-99
This was a great game despite the score being very lopsided. The trio
of Jim, Chris Birk, and Josh beat the trio of Mario, Steve and Chris.
It marked the return of Chris Birk and Mario to the TWL and
the debut of Steve and Josh. Chris and Mario proved they
hadn't lost a step in their absence with Birk hitting two homers
and driving in an unbelievable 11 runs and Mario illustrating
why he may be the best defender in the TWL. Steve displayed his
ability on both sides of the ball, leading his team in offense
and shutting the other team down as a pitcher. Both teams played
well defensively and it seemed as if the team of Jim, Birk, and Josh
were able to find the defensive holes just well enough
to generate a lot of offense.
3-30-99
A game has been scheduled for Friday at 1 am. Anybody
looking for a good game of wiffleball is encouraged to stop
by.
3-26-99
Questionably, the best game in the history of the TWL. The game
saw Bill and Gary battle Chris and Jim. It had offensive spurts from both sides
and virtually flawless defense from all four individuals. A classic battle which
was tied after seven, requiring extra innings. Bill came through in the top
of the eigth with a RBI single which proved to be the game winner. The pitching was
not perfect, but the tenacious defense more than made up for it. Also of significance in this
game, a mysterious and extremely intoxicated man offered the winning team a bottle of
wine and then proceeded to stick around and offer commentary for a few innings. There's no
limit to the kind of people you will meet during a game in the TWL.
3-19-99
Another three way game with Jim, Matt, and Chris. This game was low scoring and
was plagued by some sketchy defense by all three players at times. Matt continued his
home run tirade with three more to go with the four from the previous week. Jim however, continued his
torrid pitching by upping his strikeout total to eight in the last two games. Chris stayed typical with
nothing exceptional but nothing detrimental. This was the first
game in the history of the TWL where Matt failed to strike out
a single batter. He did go on to win the game by two runs.
3-5-99
After a three month vacation and resolved *ahem* legal complications, the TWL
was back beginning in March and seemingly hadn't lost a step. Despite the police taking
Jim, Matt, and Chris to court, the TWL was able to secure written authorization to play
from the proper authorities and left the courtroom with their dignity and clearance to
resume the games. So, for now, all problems with the cops
should be settled. This game featured a three way "dance" between Jim,
Matt, and Chris which was divided into two separate Friday
evenings. It also featured the debut of the TWL's newest weapon: The Kings Bat.
A picture of it will soon appear on the Equipment page but needless to say, this bat
has more power and a longer barrel than any regulation wiffleball bat. The inflated scores
reflect this new power source. The game was a typical, high scoring affair, with everyone
playing standard defense and offense, nothing exceptional. The final was Jim-22, Matt-21
and Chris-7.
11-28-98
The game Friday night went off without a hitch as not
one cop stopped despite the fact that many drove by. A newcomer
by the name of Brendan made his debut and demonstrated his tremendous
wiffleball skills. He, along with Jim and Gary, ammounted 11 runs
and were able to hold off the opposing duo of Bill and Chris. It was a close
game throughout for the most part with ninth inning rallies from both teams
to put extra runs on the board. Brendan struck out four and showed an impressive
breaking pitch which he can keep out over the plate. Bill continued to
contribute triple crown numbers by collecting fifteen hits. The pitching for the
most part was consistent on both sides with Jim proving to be the only real dominant
thrower in the game. The defense was shaky for both teams although occasionally
great plays were made such as the over the shoulder grab by Chris
which prevented a three run home run from Jim. Jim would later
hit a solo shot just inside the foul pole. A game has been scheduled
for Saturday night at 1 am and expects to feature the return of Matt after a two
game absence.
11-25-98
We got in about three innings of a game today before
being stopped by the police. They claimed that we were
loitering despite the fact that we have permission to play.
Jim was almost escorted away in the police car due to some
colorful remarks about the cop's actions but, alas, we stopped
playing and called it a night. The cops page
will have the name of the cop for all of those interested on who to avoid
in the St. Louis area. Without being too vulgar, he is not a nice man.
The game for Friday is still scheduled.
11-24-98
With Thanksgiving Break looming, the TWL looks to be
doing a lot of playing over the holiday. A game has firmly been
scheduled for Wednesday (11-25) at 11 pm. This game looks to
feature the return of Chris Birk who has been unable to play
since he left for college. Birk is a veteran of the TWL who
looks to make a big impact upon his return. Furthermore,
Wednesday's game may also feature the long awaited return of
Scott. Scott has been unable to play due to time conflicts and
work arrangements but has verbally committed to playing in Wednesday's game.
He is one of the founders of the TWL and some may say the originator
of the entire idea. A game for Friday has also been planned at 1 am.
So far only two or three players have committed for sure. Their are also

The team of Bill and Matt absolutely hammered the duo of
Jim and Chris in an 11-1 defeat. The game started out on the right
note for Bill and Matt as Bill swung at the first pitch in the first
inning and quicly deposited it into the street for a homerun. From there,
they continued to build up a lead and held out for the victory. Jim and
Chris combined for 10 hits but were unsuccessful in stringing enough together
to generate a lot of offense. Bill and Matt both put in tremendous pitching
performances and Matt proved that his week off did not affect his
ability as he came back strong with a five strikeout effort. Jim and Chris'
pitching started out shaky in the early innings but grew solid as the game went on
despite giving up eleven runs. The defense was solid for both teams.
Not one cop stopped by the whole night for the first time in a month or so.

Jerry debuted in the TWL and was very impressive as him and Jim
combined to defeat the team of Chris and Bill 15-12. The game was
competitive and included many lead changes but was ultimately
sealed off by a three
run homerun from Jim late in the game. Defense was solid for both
teams and the pitching went both ways, at times it was very solid and
at other times it was ineffective. Jerry showed the ability to adapt
quickly to the nighttime conditions experienced in the TWL as he
quickly learned the ropes of playing the outfield. He also
illustrated his ability to pitch, mixing a fastball with a breaking
ball to keep Bill and Chris constantly guessing. Though his debut was
impressive, he looks only to be a part time player at best. Bill
carried his team with two homeruns (including a mammoth blast onto
Tesson Ferry) and eight RBI. Despite a slow start offensively, Chris
came back to put up a decent showing despite the 15-12 loss.

This game almost made TWL history as Matt and Chris took a shutout
into the ninth inning over the team of Bill and Gary. Alas, it was
not meant to be. With a 9-0 deficit in the ninth, Gary and Bill
turned up their performance level to score six big runs before Matt
and Chris were finally able to score the final out. Consistent
offensive and defensive performances from everyone involved despite
the night being a little extra darker than usual. The pitching of
Matt and Chris was stellar before the ninth, allowing very few hits
and very few scoring opportunities. But, as Chris' arm got tired,
more balls were left over the plate in the ninth and Gary and Bill
seized the opportunity and put some runs on the board before being
retired.
